#ModiglianiUpClose 8/18: Most artists undergo a *woe-is-me* mopey phase and Modigliani was no exception. Here he is in the guise of Pierrot - a metaphor for the artist outcast popularized by the proliferation of travelling circus performers or saltimbanques in bohemian Paris. This portrait is one of two paintings on cardboard featured in the exhibition. Cardboard was an economical choice but Modigliani might have been drawn to its matte effects. Comprising of four layers, he left areas of the olive-green paper layer exposed to serve as shadows and colour accents.
