travel log: after a day of visits, we reset and head out for the evening’s festivities. the group is shuttled into a caravan of cars to take us to the opening of @amoakoboafo’s @dot.ateliers space and the opening exhibitions “homegrown,” a solo exhibition, and “side by side,” a collaborative exhibition featuring work by artists in residence.
in my last travel log, i shared a photo from earlier this day when we packed into AB’s studio and were able to ask him about not only his goals but the intentions of this residency program. to paraphrase: he explained that this project isn’t intended to place artists “on the global stage,” but rather that it is intended to open a dialogue between ghana and the world.
there is a tremendous momentum that you can feel brewing across the continent... an energy... and it’s undeniable. something that to me as an outsider feels reparative. it feels like an understanding that it’s less about what “the west” can do for the continent and more about what can happen when we share ideas, resources and remain open to models of solidarity over those of sympathy or extraction.
after the opening, we went for dinner and a private performance from my love @moses, who grew up in accra. there’s a lot more to say about how beautiful it was but i will save it.
not pictured: the end of dinner when everyone armed with bags of to-go chocolate made yet another sojourn to the club, or when we ended the night eating **perhaps the best wings of MY LIFE** at the purple pub.
1: Inside the @dot.ateliers space, designed by @adjaye_visual_sketchbook
3: undoubtedly plotting something good with @ghettogray
4-6: more views from the opening. Will tag the artists in the photo!
7-8: @moses being one of the most immensely beautiful people i have ever seen.
