As we are approaching the 7th week of Everything Everywhere in theaters, I am wrapping up my cast and crew shout outs on insta (check out my reel in my profile to see them all). It didn’t feel right to try and contain in a little story post all of my thoughts on working with one of my childhood heroes, Michelle Yeoh. So here it is as a full post. A collection of fragments and memories from our time working together. Over the years, Michelle has become family, and this is no accident. This is how Michelle moves through the world; finding people she cares about and creating family wherever she is in the world. She is always texting me and people on our crew asking for pictures of our babies and toddlers, organizing dinners and parties whenever she is town, and genuinely trying to stay connected. She is the ultimate auntie. As someone who grew up watching her films, in awe of how fearless and talented she is in everything she has done in her long career, it literally makes no sense that she has invited me and my family into her circle. To be even a small part of her legacy is something that I will always be humbled by. I could write forever about how much of a miracle she is, but I will end by repeating something she told us halfway through the shoot. She said “I know I have had a long career, but everyday you two have asked me to do something I’ve never done before. It’s making me wonder, how different my career would have been if I had made this movie with you a long time ago.” As a director, this was one of the greatest complimplents I’ve ever received from an actor. Can’t wait to see where you go next, Michelle, I know you still have so much more to offer. (Some context for some of the videos, one is a video where she is watching Turn Down For What for the first time, one is a blocking rehearsal where she used my belly button as an elevator button and realized I was ticklish, etc etc)
