Jennifer H., nurse in Allergy, Asthma, and Clinical Immunology at Mayo Clinic in Arizona, recently received the DAISY Award. A patient nominated her. Here's an excerpt from the nomination story: "I went for my regularly scheduled asthma injection. I had been going for over two years every two weeks, so I have come to know and love the nurses in the department. I was very weak and struggling with asthma symptoms. Nurse Jennifer said hello, as she always does, and noticed I did not look well. She was calm and compassionate as she asked me questions about how I was feeling and explained that she wanted a doctor to check me out before giving the injection. She could tell something was wrong; her calmness and professionalism reassured me that everything was going to be okay. The doctor urged me to go to the hospital immediately. At this time, you were not allowed to have anyone come into your visit with you, so I had walked to the Allergy area instead of having my husband take me in a wheelchair. When it was time to leave, nurse Jennifer went above and beyond again. She took a moment to explain things to my husband. She also let me know that anytime I need a wheelchair to let them know at the front and someone will take me to my appointment which was fabulous news. I sometimes suffer from social anxiety and going out anywhere can be extremely overwhelming. Jennifer has made going to my bi-weekly appointments a breeze. She is always welcoming and takes the time out of her busy schedule to let you know she cares for you. She is a compassionate, loving, and an EXTRAORDINARY nurse.
