Three years in the making ’In Past Pupils and Smiles’ (2019) by @solangeknowles is finally out. My first time officially being credited as a producer and designed by my favorite team of designers Querida (@queridi__si). Published by @Anteism in partnership with Saint Heron Press, books are available for purchase via saintheron.com. Solange Knowles’s self-composed and directed performance piece, ‘In Past Pupils and Smiles’ (2019), is a sonic, visual, spatial, and spiritual demonstration of the artist’s unique experimentation with sound and movement as it relates to space and the breadth of personal interconnection with unbridled presence and expression. A symbolic, archival preservation of the world-making incantations and bespoke kinesics in the work, the book ‘In Past Pupils and Smiles’ is a commemorative keepsake that reflects on the thoughtful and collaborative detailing that ultimately shaped the piece’s finished presentation. Including interviews with the band, background vocalists, costume designer, hairstylist, production team, and Solange herself, the book takes a deep dive into the work’s birth from an idea, and immortalizes its themes of protection, transformation, and spiritual expedition. ‘In Past Pupils and Smiles’ (2019) was staged on November 24, 2019, as the finale to the 58th International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia, in the Teatro alle Tese 2, Arsenale. The production was commissioned by Arts Council England as part of “Meetings on Art,” the festival’s official public programme, co-produced by the Delfina Foundation at the 58th International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia.
