In this acclaimed book, author Heather Anne Thompson tells the definitive history of the infamous 1971 Attica Prison uprising, the state’s violent response, and the victims' decades-long quest for justice. BLOOD IN THE WATER has historically been banned specifically for one group: people incarcerated at the Attica Correctional Facility and other New York state prisons. Thompson has fought this ban since it was instated in 2016. Heather and the book made headlines recently when New York overturned the ban of the paperback in prisons, with one caveat: incarcerated people can only access a redacted paperback version of the book.
