I grew up watching 西游记 (Journey to the West) as a small bb in Minnesota. The story of the Monkey King is not only deeply embedded in my own psyche, I kinda think it is entwined within the very cultural consciousness of China itself. I don’t even know what a western equivalent is... maybe Shakespeare? If the west has Shakespeare then China has the Monkey King. It is so cool to be part of this project, so cool to play a character that my mom, my little sister, even my GRANDMA can recognize. I told my sister on the phone that I’m gonna be Princess Iron Fan and she screamed “MOM POPPY IS GONNA BE 铁扇公主!!!” and then immediately it’s my mom on the phone ready with character notes because she knows this story front to back and has known these characters her entire life. @geneluenyang’s comic book reimagining of this legend told through the lens of an immigrant Chinese kid is brilliant. @internetkelvin’s patient and ambitious adaptation of Gene’s story into live action with generous helpings of magic and splendor and awe is breathtaking. And absolute chefs kiss to the icons behind the camera and the ones I get to share a screen with. 🙇🏻‍♀️ Anyways, this is a long ass caption for a press release but this is a special one babes.
