The culmination of our Belvoir Castle project was the transformation of the newly christened Howard Room – previously known as the Brown room due to its chocolate and citrine scheme dating back to the 1960’s. The space was exquisitely reimagined by by Sibyl Colefax & John Fowler (arguably one of the most influential interior design companies in British interiors history) maintaing a wonderful sense of grandeur combined with a humble elegance. The vibrant apricot palette of the wallpaper is beautifully balanced by a persimmon red painted dado, framing the impressive bed re-hung in a golden damask and lined in a cotton voile. The tall, narrow windows were treated with Italian strung curtains in an unlined stripe fabric complete with swags tied with rope and tassels, and the central chaise reupholstered in a striped velvet with a subtle leopard print. All the historical aspects of the room had to be taken into consideration, with particular attention to the paintings which all had to be re-hung in the exact same positions as had been originally. The combined strengths of de Gournay’s technical expertise and the castle’s fascinating heritage has resulted in a unique and striking revival of one of Europe’s greatest decorative legacies, a masterful showcase to be admired by future generations just as the 18th century examples are revered today.
