We did it, Joe.
Spent this unbelievably gorgeous fall day at the White House for a belated celebration of the 32nd anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act. To be in the presence of so many disabled world-changers today is a privilege I don’t take for granted, and I can’t quite fathom that I had a place among them.
I’m processing the complexity of the experience, too. Celebrating the disability community doesn’t erase the many ways our government continues to fail the disability community (especially in its handling of the pandemic), and I have no intention of ever keeping quiet about that. But in this moment, I am celebrating the hard-won progress that has made it so disabled people are fully recognized as worthy of celebration.
