The internet loves designer and tastemaker Athena Calderone’s influential style: Every inch of her Insta-famous Brooklyn townhouse has been studied and copied - except the garden. After tackling the renovation of the four-story Greek Revival beauty, @eyeswoon and her husband @vcalderone were understandably fatigued and at the end of their budget. Says Athena of the enviably large (25-foot-wide) backyard, it was “a tangled mess of so many vines, weeds, and overgrown trees. It had untapped potential and remained that way for a good couple of years.” During New York’s Covid shutdown, Athena, Victor, and son Jivan decided to tame the unruly oasis, removing stumps, weeds, and old fencing. “It wasn’t a menagerie of weeds anymore, but there was no plant life,” says Athena. “There was no soul to it; there was no creativity.” She turned to landscape designer Brook Klausing of @brooklandscape to transform the barren space into the Mediterranean-inspired outdoor living area she imagined: “I was inspired by the texture of Mexican feather grass, olive trees and their silvery, sage tones,” says @eyeswoon. Klausing and Calderone collaborated on much of the massive outdoor furniture. Of the final result, Athena says “Everything has grit and patina, and an element of imperfection.” Exclusive story, link in bio. Photos @william.jess.laird text @jxie03 🪴
