TONIGHT’S FLIGHT How could I not be transported back to the sadness I felt when I wrote this song in early 2019. I had just watched LA disappear down La Cienaga Blvd and wondered what lay ahead for me in the half-space over the pacific. By the time I was home I sat down at my mum’s piano and worked on the song for 3 days until I had it all down. The song is a series of sketches of that time: conversations with friends at dinner, an impending sense of doom in the world - relationships ending, extreme weather events, the Notre Dame fire. I remember my world - and THE world - feeling fragile and uncertain. To look back on it after the events of 2020; the bushfires, the pandemic, the splitting of the self into pieces, what it foreshadowed was way worse and it sometimes strikes me as almost meek. But I chose to include it in the album where maybe ‘better’ songs could’ve been because it felt true to the story of the album, and to its moment in time. “Before I left I had dinner with a friend She said everybody’s breaking up, What a disaster, Meanwhile the ice caps still melt... And she calls me when we find out Paris is burning up, Smoke is impermanence And it’s hard to say goodbye, To anything you love, anywhere, anytime...”
