We are so excited every time someone shares a story of their experience watching our film with their families. Especially when the film leads to healing conversations that might not have happened otherwise. It’s honestly been a mind blowing reminder of how powerful filmmaking can be. On the other hand, we’ve heard from many people, especially children of immigrants, who wish they could share the film with their parents, but aren’t sure how to start the conversation (we get it, our film can be fucking weird).
So in honor of our film being available to watch at home, we asked the incredible Walter Chaw @mangiotto to help craft a simple message to help prepare your parents for the wild ride that is our film and place it in a context that might make more sense to them.
Here’s the thing, I’ve been showing my very aggressively weird work to my immigrant parents for almost a decade, and it’s always a gamble. Sometimes they get it, sometimes they totally don’t. Bing Liu once told us that these kinds of conversations with our parents are a 4 dimensional process, so don’t be disappointed if you share our film and they don’t immediately respond the way you want them too. They might not ever get it, but that’s okay. Sometimes just the act of sharing something that matters to you is enough. Good luck and have fun.
