Today’s #NY1at30 coverage looks back at the mayoral tenure of Michael Bloomberg. This photo is from Jan. 1, 2002, when Bloomberg was sworn into office by his predecessor, Rudolph Giuliani, right after midnight in Times Square. A variety of policies were enacted across the city during the 12 years Bloomberg was in office. They included an attempt to cap the size of sodas and other sugary drinks in stores that ultimately failed; a jump in the use of the NYPD’s stop-and-frisk policy; a ban on smoking cigarettes in public areas; and the closure of 150 poor-performing schools, replaced by hundreds of smaller schools. A drop in crime that began during Giuliani’s tenure continued under Bloomberg. Bloomberg ultimately ran for a third term after the City Council controversially approved his request to extend the two-term limits on city offices in October 2008. He won that reelection bid and served until the end of 2013. He was succeeded by Bill de Blasio. PC: (AP Photo/Mark Lennihan)
