Built to honor a departed king, Casablanca’s Hassan II Mosque stands prominently looking out to the Atlantic Ocean and is an opulent vision inside and out. The brainchild of French architect Michael Pinseau, design standouts include the retractable roof affording worshipers a view of the starry night sky, the glass floor putting the Atlantic ocean on full display, and the sixty story high minaret, making the mosque the tallest structure in Morocco. The construction took place over seven years, completed in 1993, employing thousands of craftsmen and using materials almost entirely from Morocco, save for imported white granite columns and glass chandeliers from Murano.
