This is the Texas State Capitol. I’m standing with the legislator who wrote the law that banned abortion in September. They didn’t wait for the Supreme Court decision. Nearly overnight, the number of abortions in Texas decreased by 60%, there were roughly 3,000 fewer abortions per month. Texas can help explain what will now happen in many more states. Some women were forced to go through with their pregnancies. Others were able to cross statelines to get care. We spoke with them. Some identified as anti-abortion rights until they were faced with the decision. Most of them were mothers. None of them described it as an easy decision. 26 states, more than half the country, has or will attempt to outlaw abortion imminently. There were more than 300,000 abortions in those 26 states in 2019. The effect this decision will have on our country is seismic. Our coverage on this issue will be different. It won’t be simple or surface level. It will be complicated and emotional and thought-provoking. Nuanced and at times, uncomfortable to watch. Follow @vicenews for our coverage. We will have two hour long specials airing next Wednesday and Thursday.
