Predictions from the futurepast. Antique frame, cowrie shells, string vest, grease/oil, body print digitally rendered on satin - 58 x 65 cm - 2022 This was the last piece made for the exhibition, reflecting on all the conversations and things made. I thought about making an object which seeks to encompass all aspects of time. A time travelling object. Past: Emily & I spoke about time from a biological aspect (DNA) and what it means to physically embody the past & our ancestors. Reflecting on who some of them might have been (artists, writers, philosophers, thinkers, scientists) and how we might access some of that previous information. Present: The background of the sculpture is my body, my physical vessel. Marking my current positioning in the world whilst also being the embodiment of the past. Realising that being an artist is not an accident but rather tapping back into some of that previous history. Future: the adornment of cowrie shells is an ode to a form of Yoruba divination using 16 shells to consult the Orishas on someone’s fate or future. Past.Present.Future. With this the physical exhibition has drawn to a close and will continue online on @thedadagallery virtual space.
