#ModiglianiUpClose 10/ 18: Coucou, c’est Madam Pompidour! Modigliani had a penchant for creative types. The subject of at least 14 portraits by the artist, Beatrice Hastings (Emily Alice Haigh) was no exception. The London born South African writer, poet, and critic, was a prolific was a prolific contributor to socialist paper, The New Age. Hastings was one of the many noms de guerre she adopted in her parodies criticizing issues from the suffragette movement to the war. And yes, she was also known for her sartorial flair.
In this instance, Modigliani’s emphasizes the pouf of the feathers with swirling brush strokes and the delicacy of the model’s minimalist necklace with barely-there touches of white. Her rouge is offset with audacious accents of green to enhance her features and to suggest shadows - probably my favourite of all his colour accent choices. Also loving the vertical line down her lips - an exaggerated cupid’s bow I think...
Infrared images show remnants of a previous composition. Modigliani added a white interlayer, visible in various spots throughout the background and contours.
