Since we are in the middle of Leo season, we are highlighting a #Torahbinder featuring a lion, the symbol of #Leo. Swipe to see a close-up!
We do not know the name of the boy to whom this Torah binder is dedicated because that part of the binder is missing, but his birth date appears on the right-hand side. A magnificent lion represents his zodiac sign, topped with the Hebrew inscription, “Symbol of Leo.” The Torah binder bears a blessing with kind wishes for the child’s future, including marriage, as is customary in Germanic lands. In the charming wedding scene figures don nineteenth-century dress and are pictured under a canopy, or huppah.
See this piece on view in our collection exhibition, “Scenes from the Collection.” Click the link in bio to reserve your timed tickets.
