On Thursday night I hosted one of my favorite GOOD MOVE creative projects, Assembly, in Domino Square — 40 humans of all ages, genders, shapes, and sizes coming together to move and create something special.
What I love about this practice is how many threads it weaves together: engaging with our environment not just as a backdrop but as a collaborator. Connecting to the city, the evening air, the passersby who pause and witness. A reminder that movement, art, play, and connection belong everywhere — to everyone.
Before we began, one of the youngest participants raised her hand and asked, “Why did you want to do this?” The question made me laugh because of how clear and thoughtful this little one was, but it also cut right to the heart of it: I created Assembly because dance is for everybody and can be done anywhere, because it connects us to each other and slows us down to presence in a city that can feel really isolating and really fast, and because dancing together connects us something bigger than ourselves. Our ancestors knew this — they gathered outside to move together, to celebrate, to grieve, to mark time. For me, teaching movement has never been about the steps or the performance — it’s about being in it, feeling something, building something together.
For participants, it’s a chance to step out of the everyday and into creativity and play, without the pressure to “perform.” For observers, it’s a surprise gift — an invitation to witness joy, presence, and connection unfolding in real time.
Assembly has become one of my favorite events of the year, and I’m already looking forward to the next one. Thanks to all the playful, open-hearted movers who came out to make a dance in the park on a Thursday night — you rule. ❤️
