Today we share an image of an artwork exhibited in 1951 at Whitechapel Gallery as part of the East End Academy, one of the gallery’s longest-standing open call exhibitions, known today as The London Open. While this photograph from our archive is black and white, the painting on display captured a colourful and intimate family moment. The work was a copy of a popular official Royal photograph that circulated in the 1950s. We are all touched by families; our own, those of our friends, colleagues and communities, and of course in the UK and beyond, the Royal Family. We come together to mourn our losses and to reflect on extraordinary lives. Whitechapel Gallery is closed on Monday 19 September.
