On Tuesday morning, nearly 50 autonomous activists conducted a die-in outside NBC News and Fox News Headquarters in protest of mainstream media outlets manufacturing consent for both the genocide in Gaza and Israel’s increased aggression towards its neighbors. In an effort to draw attention to the media’s complicity, activists lying down covered themselves in blood-splattered sheets while others held up a banner that read “WHAT’S BEING COVERED UP?” Other participants distributed info sheets to passersby that aimed to answer that question and educate readers on how to spot media bias in a headline while providing alternative sources for seeking out lesser-biased news sources. Global media outlets such as NBC, ABC, CNN, Fox, and The New York Times shape public opinion by promoting certain narratives while suppressing others through self-censorship, external pressures, selective framing, and marginalization of dissenting voices. They have continued to perpetuate bias and spread misinformation through a number of policies and tactics, including employing former members of the IDF on their review staff and prohibiting reporters from covering Palestinian perspectives in news reporting.
