Manteca. Beautifully detailed, hand carved pig's head made from reclaimed Canal lock gate Oak. The mottled head is stained blue black from a chemical reaction with the old embedded ironmongery and the natural tannins of the oak. A perfect timber for creating the Manteca signage. The swinging pig's head is a fine signifier of expert butchery and in house salumeria. They present Fire-cooked nose-to-tail cuts of meat and a fine offering of hand-rolled pasta in this simple, Italian-inspired diner. If you find yourself purusing Shoreditch streets then I would recommend a stop at Manteca, if not to eat, then to admire the exquisite workmanship that has gone into creating the restaurant emblem.
