An elevated digestif moment
For moments when Thanksgiving abundance (and the holiday feasting) become a touch excessive, a refined digestive remedy awaits.
Did you know Fernet-Branca is often sipped in small amounts after a meal to settle the stomach and aid digestion?
It contains a blend of herbs and spices, such as aloe, gentian, and chamomile, which are believed to stimulate gastric juices and aid the digestive process. For me, it’s a little too bitter to drink by itself, but it works nicely in this drink (recipe by Taste and Tipple)
Happy Thanksgiving! 🦃
Fernet Festivus
1.75 oz rye whiskey
.5 oz Fernet-Branca
.5 oz homemade gingerbread syrup*
2 dashes Angostura bitters
orange peel
Instructions:
Combine all ingredients in a mixing glass | add ice and stir several revolutions with a bar spoon until well-chilled | strain into a Nick and Nora glass | express citrus oils from an orange peel onto the surface of the drink | garnish with an orange twist
Gingerbread Syrup
Recipe by @the.boozy.ginger
1 cup water
1 cup brown sugar
2 cinnamon sticks
1 tsp allspice (whole or ground)
1-3 pieces of 1” sized peeled and cut fresh ginger root
1 tsp vanilla bean paste (or extract after cooling which is what I used)
1/4 tsp ground cloves
1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
dash of salt
In a small saucepan, combine water, brown sugar, cinnamon sticks, ginger, allspice, cloves, nutmeg, and salt | bring to a medium heat and stir until sugar dissolves | reduce heat and simmer for about 10-15 minutes | let cool and add the vanilla extract | strain out solids and store in a container with a tight lid | refrigerate and use for up to 2 weeks
