This is my late Great-Grandma Jo. I remember admiring her as a kid because of how she lived — an admiration that still holds true today. Her seemingly default state of life was one of selflessness, gentleness, and most apparent to me, thankfulness. On Thanksgiving, one of my favorite things to do was sit with her as she picked the rest of the meat off the turkey after dinner, making sure not a single bit of the bird went to waste — a practice she picked up on the farm from earlier in her life. In the process, we talked about many things — my soccer tournaments, the Bible, Great-Grandpa’s life as a soldier, and more. But, no matter what we talked about, she retained a deafening tone of thankfulness. She was thankful in everything. The best part? She genuinely lived like it. She made me realize a life of thankfulness is inherently a life of joy. And this joy wasn’t found in her, but rather Christ in her. That I was certain. I think if you and I could live a life even half as thankful, and therefore joyful, as hers, God would be proud. Perhaps we should try.
