The first of three January covers celebrating the annual AD100 list features a multi-year labor of love between Pamela Shamshiri (@studioshamshiri) and her client, gallerist Shulamit Nazarian. (Nazarian, last image with partner Matthew Oshinsky.) The formidable Smalley House (1969-73) was designed by A. Quincy Jones, a titan of Southern California modernism, and is one of the architect’s largest single family residences. Nazarian lived in the imposing structure for more than a decade, but @pamelashamshiri says, “She didn’t seem completely comfortable there. It was a lot to navigate day to day, especially with her sons going off to college.” The creative pair joined forces to fully renovate and update the house for 21st-century life while respecting its history. Says @shulamitnazarian, “Architecture is a living thing. It had to be relevant to the way we live now. So we utilized Jones’s language in all the changes we made, to elevate and amplify the power of his architecture.” Curvy, voluptuous forms and lines proliferate in the interiors in what Shanshiri describes as “a soft, feminine counterpoint to the rigidity of all the vertical black mullions and crisp modernist planes.” Full story, link in bio. 📷 @stephenkentjohnson styling @michaelreynoldsnyc text @mayer.rus
