An Alabama buck sheds his velvet, a #mossyoakmoment captured by @jovtes. Velvet shedding is brought on by significant increases in a buck’s testosterone levels and photo period changes, shorter days and increased darkness. Once the velvet shedding process begins, it typically lasts anywhere from a few hours to several days. The drying velvet is rubbed off on trees and bushes and can even be eaten by birds and other deer. The nutrient-rich velvet that hits the forest floor is usually quickly scavenged by mice and other critters.
