🪺 Purple Martins begin to build a nest about four to six weeks after arriving at their breeding site. Both the male and female work together to build their nest, which usually takes tree to four weeks to complete. Purple Martins typically build their nests out of straw, twigs, and pine needles. They may also build a mud dam in the front of the nest.
🍃 The final stage of nest building is lining the bowl of the nest with fresh, green leaves. Purple Martins will normally start laying eggs soon after bringing in green leaves. So a fresh leaf is a literal “green flag” that eggs are on the way!
