#DailyHBpierPhoto - Labor Day 2022 in Huntington Beach. We decided to go for a walk on the HB pier. Avoiding Main Street we slink down the alleys and side streets, crossing the coast highway and into the plaza at the foot of the pier where various people stand with signs screaming at passers by, some of which engage in conversation, at their peril, with these frothing zealots. What an epic waste of time trying to reason with the mentally ill. Aside from the few citizens who can't help but respond, these people mostly argue amongst themselves. The flat-earthers, the born-agains, and the anti-Catholics just yell at each other. I heard one, "Well then, you are a heretic!" and a few, "You're going to HELL! No! You're going to Hell!" The cacophony of ideologies clashing was unsettling, Deanna mouthed to me, "What the F is going on here?" It felt like the end of days or a societal collapse of some sort, but you just keep moving past the pitfalls of hellfire and soon the yelling subsides into a low din as you walk, hovering 20 feet over the sand with an overview of the thousands of people enjoying their last days of summer basking in the sun, swimming, fishing, strolling, surfing, riding bikes, and peacocking around in beach bods. A bigger wave pushes people sitting near the shore back after one families' spot gets soaked. Some try to build protective walls out of sand around their towel camps, which will inevitably fail. A young man uses his girlfriend's ass as a fingerboard ramp, as she lays on her side with a tiny string laced through her crack leaving a lot of cheek space for kickflips and aerials. Vape clouds intermittently poof up and out over the crowd. Most people are looking at their phones or taking selfies. We walked to the end of the pier and back rather quickly, snapping a few photos on film here and there, and a few on the iphone, then back to work in the cool comfort of home, tennis on in the background as I write stories and captions from 20 years ago on photographs that will be exhibited next year. #edsphotoarchive
