As we continue our #NY1at30 coverage, we look back at Oct. 23, 2008, when the City Council voted in favor of extending term limits. Then-Mayor Michael Bloomberg asked the Council to extend term limits so he could run for a third term the following year. The bill passed 29-22. The decision was met by opposition by some elected officials and New Yorkers, particularly because two-term limits were initially enacted, and later reconfirmed, by referendums voted on by all New Yorkers in the 1990s. In 2010, voters passed a new referendum by a large margin to restore two-term limits. Bloomberg won his reelection bid in 2009 - but the margin of victory was smaller than his 2005 win.
