The mesmerizing Constance DeJong, performing her novel “Modern Love” (1977) at Western Front in Vancouver in 1978.
Describing the piece in their archival project “Acts of Transfer,” the artist-run center Western Front writes, “In DeJong’s text, narratives, characters, and events seamlessly slip in and out of sequence, rendering time fluid and non-linear.... The strong emphasis on stream of consciousness, the unabashedly personal, and the use of projection as a narrative device is frequently used by DeJong.”
The set is minimal: a spotlight, a stool, a piano (off screen), a mic. DeJong’s recitation also featured a pre-recorded audio clip of a documentary narrator (David Warrilow from Mabou Mines), music clips by The Channels and Bob Dylan, and “Modern Love Waltz,” a commissioned work by Philip Glass. The performance was documented by Kate Craig.
