In 2011, one of the most expensive paintings of all-time — one of French artist Paul Cèzanne’s “The Card Players” — was sold in Qatar for over $250M.
The painting itself is a masterpiece. But even then, it’s hard to comprehend paying such a large amount for it. Therein lies the question: Why is it worth so much?
One of the main reasons for the painting’s high value is Cèzanne’s signature. A painting’s worth often comes from the artist’s signature — not the work itself — as it’s used as a way of authenticating their work. In this case, the painting became a worthy masterpiece only after Cèzanne signed it.
So what’s the point? There is an epidemic failure in humanity to understand our worth. We set our worth on misplaced sources of value — appearance, achievements, status. Naturally, when we fall short of these, often through the parasite of comparison, we feel inadequate; we feel unworthy.
But what if each of us are actually masterpieces of infinite worth, intentionally created and signed by God? What if despite our thoughts and feelings towards ourselves, we were made worthy by the signature of God? I wonder if that would change the way we see ourselves, see others, and live.
