Lately a normal check in phone call with my dad is just us going back and forth with 잔소리 (small talk)~ I’ll say things like “Stay home, don’t go on your nightly walks right now until things calm down.” And he’ll say things like “Keep your guard up, and carry your pepper spray”..... The string of violent attacks against Asians and Asian Americans has left me and my community on edge. I’m scared, angry, and almost feel like I’ve been betrayed???? Still wrapping my head around everything.. but I’m starting to find comfort in the vigilance and courage I’ve witnessed over the last few weeks and I’ve never been more proud of be Korean American. In the efforts to keep our community safe, @jiro.j.m and I are expanding “In the Mood for Love, Not Hate” Initiative started by @sunnytc (SF) to Los Angeles. Our goal is to distribute 2000 safety kits to local senior centers and outreach programs. Each kit includes a personal alarm, lanyard, and ID holder. These AAPI safety accessories are meant to be a symbol of community support and proactive resistance towards Asian violence and hate crimes. We hope that the lanyards can provide an added ounce of security to those who are fearful of being alone outdoors or running their daily errands. One key eastern value my parents have instilled in us since we were little is to RESPECT OUR ELDERS. Let’s take it one step further and protect ours. More Info is in the gofundme link in my bio.
