This crazy mixed-up fashion world of ours can be a tough place to fit into - we all know that. As a plus-size, Gen X, cishet, he/him, Arsenal-supporting e-biker who still loves wearing Old Navy, I feel it every time security mistakes me for a pro runway photographer (I wish!), or attempts to bundle me away from an Arnault, a Pinault or Kanye. But we can’t be anything except for ourselves, right? However there is one part of my identity that, until today, I thought fashion would never understand. You see (deep breath), I am... an Android user. To say that more clearly: I do not use an iPhone. In fashion everyone else uses Apple devices. Over years of working the shows with Samsungs, Motorolas, and currently the Google Pixel 4a 5g - what a camera! - I have lost count of the times people have pointed out this difference. They might say, “Like, so, wait: I can’t AirDrop it to you?”, or “Oh, your charger isn’t for iPhone?” or even just plain old “Whoa! What is that?”. Meeting Tim Cook at a Cavalli show, or Jony Ive at Ferrari, or Eve Jobs the other day at Coperni? Just plain awkward. And all just because I choose to utilise the capabilities, flexibility and UI that Android phones and Chromebooks offer. Today though something wonderful happened. For years - years! - I have been telling Vogue Runway that it’s crazy they only have an iOS app when only 14 per cent of the world’s phone users use iPhones. For the rest of us, the overlooked 86 per cent, the only option has always been to check out Runway in a browser - a browser! Yet my entreaties to Think Different fell on deaf ears. I had all but given up hope of change. And then today - like it was nothing - Nicole Phelps casually mentioned as we were on the way to Giambattista Valli that the Vogue Runway app is now available in Android on the Play Store! I had it downloaded and fired up within two minutes! Awesome! I think it might be even better on Android than on iPhone! When we got to that Valli show, there wasn’t a single other person like me on the front row opposite, and all I felt was happy. Because being an Android user - or just someone who’s Android-curious - isn't a crime. Thanks @voguerunway xxx
