Yurika, 27, lives in Pucallpa, a city on the edges of the Amazon rainforest, in Peru. She's a single mother of four children from three fathers. She takes Cyclofem, a once-monthly injectable contraceptive. “I had my first child at 16. In my culture, men are irresponsible. So I protect myself,” she says. In Peru’s Amazon region, 25% of women have their first pregnancy before the age of 18. Suspicions toward birth control methods are deeply rooted in this patriarchal society and reinforced by the Catholic Church and by a campaign to forcibly sterilize indigenous women conducted by president Fujimori between 1996 and 2001. These images are from my project Happy Pills done with @arnaudrobert. Happy Pills is a book published by @delpireandco, a film produced by @intermezzofilms and an exhibition @fermedestilleulsrenens Image 2 Linda Serruchi Murayari, 15, with Adriano Valentin, 1 month old. She has decided to take an injectable contraceptive to be administrated every three months. She does not have a relationship with the father who is 17 years old. Image 3 Ana Cristina Del Aguila Balarezo, 15, with her son Flavio Valentino, 2. She is 7 months pregnant, from a different father. She is not in a relationship with him.
