The Portuguese word “saudade” perfectly describes something I think we can all relate to: “a feeling of longing, melancholy, or nostalgia.” When we think back on a relationship that initially had so much potential, it doesn’t take much to lead us down a path of wistful nostalgia . . .
But we can’t let our nostalgia cloud the reality of a situation: the reality of who someone was and how they made us feel.
The idea that the relationship must still be important because we continue to have feelings for it is the reason why we get stuck on people and feel like we can’t get over them.
It’s important to realize that this wasn’t actually a lost future—one that was supposed to happen but didn’t—but rather a normal feeling of melancholy about the past.
