I am relaxed after Greece,ready for the big changes of fall. Back when I was a reluctant actress, I had an audition for something I was really nervous about. I went over to my mom’s house and her friend Bob was visiting. He was a character actor and had done a lot of theatre and had worked with David Mamet. I said “Oh I’m so glad you’re here.I need help! I don’t know how to do these lines and I’m terrified I’ll make a fool of myself.” I wanted him to give me some big acting lesson. But he said “Don’t even try to memorize the lines. Just focus on being relaxed. That’s all you have to do.That’s your only job. Sit in the waiting room before you go in and get into a state of relaxation. You know everything you need to do and how to do this, and from a place of relaxation will you be able to access what makes you you. They want to see YOU. DO NOT PREPARE.” He was so casual and like “don’t worry about it,man.” I felt immediate relief. “Do not prepare!”I had an incredible audition and I felt so confident and peaceful and in charge. I think of his advice often, when I get anxious or expect things to go wrong. If you get quiet and relaxed, whatever that means for you, you can access all your inner knowing and strength.
