A few notes from my recent residency in the lowveld. Lines walked and drawn, and stones placed and thrown, were explored as part of ongoing questions about place and belonging. Here a simple line made by walking, over and over, marks a lifeline to water, a pollination corridor, a bicycle route, a work commute, a way home, a road in the making, each shaping the way a place is navigated and how it is come to be known. Many of these paths are hundreds of years old, maintained through intergenerational knowledge following patterns of migration, seasons, care, labour and displacement. ‘The path is an extension of walking, the places set aside for walking are monuments to that pursuit, and walking is a mode of making the world as well as being in it.’ (Solnit, 2001) @thatchbyamyellenbogen @saffca.eu @lionsandsgamereserve
