Con Edison wants to raise your gas and electric bill by $60/month in 2023. While you’re struggling to pay the rates they're charging right now, they think this is the perfect time to increase their profits & further invest in fossil fuels. Right now, there's a process happening that's run by the state's Public Service Commission. It's called a rate case. It regulates how much ConEd can charge us, what kinds of infrastructure they will build or repair, and what kind of community benefits the company will provide. During the rate case, the public can submit comments but a lot of NYers don't even that this is taking place, or how utility prices are even decided. So far, only 6 public hearings for this rate case have taken place, all over two days in March. That's why my office has been doing outreach for months to make sure NYers know about the rate case and how they can fight back. Earlier this fall, Sen. Mike Gianaris and I, along with 50+ of our colleagues, requested an additional public hearing. We still haven't heard back - which is why we're hosting our own hearing. The "People's Hearing" will be a space for members of the public, as well as other legislators, to submit official public comments on this case -- and we'll show the Public Service Commission that NYers won't stand for this rate increase. Come join us - next Monday, November 21 at the Variety Boys & Girls Club in Astoria, at 7pm. RSVP: bit.ly/peoples_hearing
