Last week I opened a dream show at @entrance.nyc with paintings and sculpture by Ray Smith and Rhys Gaetano, titled “All in if you Are.”
In my early twenties I had the incredible chance to teach a string of curatorial and DIY “making” classes at the BHQFU. Along with my janitorial superintendent duties, I learned a huge amount under the guidance of @rhysgaetano and the rest of the @brucehighquality foundation there. I feel lucky to show three of Rhys’ new paintings, made in encaustic wax, lined with steel. The work is stunning and best seen in person.
Rhys frequently works on collaborative projects in the studio of the legendary artist Ray Smith, who’s practice I knew of simply by growing up in NYC. Heavily active over the last thirty years, Ray leads by example showing that art making and creative community can be kneaded into every crevice of a good life. We have the chance to present six of his fantastic paintings on mirror, the “Chido Muy Muy” series.
The show is tied together with a spinning disco ball by Rhys titled “101.1” that plays its namesake station out of it’s body through an amp and fully wired boat speakers (water proof!). The sculpture is the latest in a series of disco balls that have floated in the the airspace of Ray’s studio for years (that many of us have danced under). A space that is naturally intergenerational and always engaging.
If you have a chance come by Entrance, “All in if you Are” runs through Sunday, October 24th. 48 Ludlow st. We are open regularly Thursday-Sunday, 1-7 pm. Though always happy to meet there by appointment too, reach out!
