In case you were wondering where I get my love of outdoor dancing and guerilla performance — it’s the 15 years I’ve spent performing with Douglas Dunn & Dancers! It was a joy to dance in this summer’s revival of Vain Combat, the first piece I did with the company back in 2010. Harder on my body than it was 15 years ago, but the thrill of dancing where we’re not “supposed to” feels even more subversive now (in my twenties, nothing felt risky — as I get older, a lot does), and the intention of the piece feels more relevant than ever. Douglas writes:
“Vain Combat is a paean to cross-purposes: to my shoulders being bumped on Manhattan streets by spatially challenged shoppers/walkers/tourists; to war-machine-driven killing by governments; and to the many insufficiently considered antagonistic acts that fall between these two extremes.” Always grateful for this work, and for this lineage that lives in my bones <3 Thanks to my loves for the captures 📸 @momsnewfriend @lulusoni @emilygiovine
