GAZE (2021)
The installation work is built on my thinking of the theory of the looking-glass self and the concept of the gaze. I use photography as the main medium to explore the relationship between people's self-consciousness and their perception of others. Integrate with moving images, sounds, and reflective material to express the imagery of gaze.
I was trying to express my reflection as an artist, especially during this post-pandemic era. After the world has been through endless antagonism and absolute chaos, I find out that the fragmentation and struggle of ideologies could be strong dazzling light, it blinds us, it blurs us, it hurts us. When we gaze at others, we don't see a real human being, we see the reflection of ourselves. Otherness is a mirror, our self-consciousness is a strong light. It's like there is an invisible curtain between us, the real connection has never been made. The video production and sound-making follow the stream of this theme. Light/Mirror/Reflection/Disconnection/Red
There are two 3d printing hands with red strings on the sides, the palm upwards hand is receiving, the palm down hand is releasing. Red strings represent our spilling out minds, those strings pour towards the mirror on the ground. They couldn't connect to the other side, but in the mirror surface, they reconnect with their own reflection.
