Merry Christmas🎄 For many, Christmas is associated with H.C. Andersen, because it is believed that he invented the braided Danish Christmas heart, but also because several of his stories are read aloud at this particular holiday. One of these is 'The Little Match Girl' from December 1845, which is a popular Christmas fairy tale, despite the fact that it takes place on New Year's Eve. There are many theories about where H.C. Andersen got his inspiration for 'The Little Match Girl' from. Some believe that the fairy tale came about after H.C. Andersen had seen a work by the Danish painter J.Th. Lundbye or from when he had read 'The Star Money' by the Brothers Grimm, while other theories say that the idea arose through his friendship with the writer Charles Dickens. H.C. Andersen's fairy tales have also been an inspiration to many and have been diligently reproduced by various artists over time, of which the work from 1983 by Henry Heerup is just one example of. You will find Heerup's work at our auction for modern art and design, which ends on 3 January.
