For the past two years, Border Angels has invited all of you to de-colonize your Thanksgiving and offered ways to learn new practices and unlearn harmful or insensitive ones. This year, we continue this new tradition, in the hopes of educating ourselves and honoring indigenous communities.
While Thanksgiving, for many of us, is a holiday to give thanks for what we have, including our loved ones, how this holiday came about has often been misrepresented and romanticized. Thanksgiving Day is a reminder of the genocide and continued suffering of Native American peoples. Many individuals instead have used this day as “National Day of Mourning,” and honor Native ancestors and the struggles of native peoples who survive today.
We at Border Angels believe in education, advocacy, and promoting a culture of love. While we offer the following resources, we welcome input and hope you will add your recommendations so we may all learn and grow together.
Border Angels would like to acknowledge that we are in what we now know as San Diego, the ancestral and encoded territory of the Kumeyaay people. We invite all of you to:
1. Learn what indigenous land you are on.
2. Learn about the Indigenous history of the land you live on of Native groups in your region.
3. Learn the real history of Thanksgiving
4. Celebrate native people
5. Listen to indigenous voices
6. Support Indigenous and Native-Owned businesses
7. De-colonize your dinner
8. Support important causes
9. Like, share & expand!
