🔔 One year ago today, we lost the iconic feminist writer bell hooks. Prior to her passing, she gifted a bell to the artist Theaster Gates (@theastergates), which is now on view in “Young Lords and Their Traces.” This is the story of “bell’s Bell.” Curators Massimiliano Gioni and Gary Carrion-Murayari envisioned the Second Floor of Gates’s exhibition as a personal museum. Artworks, artifacts, and mementos from Gates’s life come together to trace his emotional and artistic trajectory through life, and the result is less a map of personal interests than it is an assembly of voices in which the viewer is invited to participate. The collection includes a pair of shoes gifted by the late fashion designer Virgil Abloh and an Agnes Martin drawing, among others. Gates collects objects and ephemera to demonstrate the archive as not only a form of preservation, but also of devotion to those who came before us.
