🔔 One year ago today, we lost the iconic feminist writer bell hooks. Prior to her passing, she gifted a bell to the artist Theaster Gates (@theastergates), which is now on view in “Young Lords and Their Traces.” This is the story of “bell’s Bell.”
Curators Massimiliano Gioni and Gary Carrion-Murayari envisioned the Second Floor of Gates’s exhibition as a personal museum. Artworks, artifacts, and mementos from Gates’s life come together to trace his emotional and artistic trajectory through life, and the result is less a map of personal interests than it is an assembly of voices in which the viewer is invited to participate. The collection includes a pair of shoes gifted by the late fashion designer Virgil Abloh and an Agnes Martin drawing, among others.
Gates collects objects and ephemera to demonstrate the archive as not only a form of preservation, but also of devotion to those who came before us. In gathering and preserving these objects that suspend us in time, Gates intimately reveals the web of memory that connects us all.
