So honored to have my beadwork and paper weaving featured in the @museumofthecherokeeindian’s new exhibition DISRUPTION. These two pieces are about my own disconnections from land through removal, allotment, and flooding, so I am incredibly proud to have them being shown in our Cherokee homelands—especially as part of an exhibit that aligns so closely with my values and work. The deepest S’gi to @eeee.its.evan and @sdakotab for the invitation and for curating this incredible show. I can’t wait to come visit! From the museum: ・・・ MCI is pleased to announce the opening of DISRUPTION, on view now through September 11, 2023. An art intervention installed throughout the Museum's permanent exhibition, DISRUPTION invites 36 Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians and Cherokee Nation artists to respond to the removal of funerary and culturally sensitive objects from public view. Made using traditional aesthetics, the contemporary works disrupting the Museum’s archaeological timeline—drawn and painted, carved from wood, shaped in clay, woven in thread, and crafted using a number of innovative mixed media methods—offer Native perspectives on Cherokee culture, history, and current issues. (The show opened a few weeks ago but I was on an IG hiatus, so excuse the tardiness! There’s also more info about the story of these pieces if you scroll back on my grid.)
