Tomorrow is Giving Tuesday! The combination of border closure due to COVID, record-breaking heatwaves, and decades of inhumane border policies, made 2021 the deadliest year on record for border crossings. Together, these instances have forced thousands of immigrant families into the most dire of circumstances, and are left with little to no legal options to cross. Alternatively, and although it is a human right, the US has essentially done away with the asylum-seeking process. The US is dealing with an almost 2-year backlog of asylum cases of migrants subject to policies like Remain in Mexico and Title 42. Policies which have automatically deported migrants to Mexico, forcing them to wait in border cities like Tijuana with no government aid, living in shelters that are all at max capacity. As a result, we are faced with a growing number of people being placed in immigration detention, and a heartbreaking increase in deaths at our southern border. In response, Border Angels has focused efforts on our Families Reunidas Bond Program to help bond low-income families pay for immigration bonds. We also launched our Volviendo A Casa (Returning Home) program through which we hope to bring relief to low-income families lacking the monetary resources to pay funeral expenses or transportation of the migrant bodies for proper burial.
