This weekend I also celebrated my mum’s birthday. I’d wear this jade necklace to feel closer to her. When I first came out to her quite a few years ago, we didn’t exchange many words in that moment but the quiet tears spoke volumes for the immense love we will continue to have for each other. Mine was out of fear I’d hurt her (and my Dad’s) feelings or that they’d think they’ve failed as parents when they’ve been just the most perfect. Hers was out of fear for my safety and wellbeing. When she did finally speak, she said, “I’m not okay with this (yet) but I’m relieved you could be honest to me and Pa.” This was followed by a few questions from a place of care and concern that was easily appeased after a little bit of sex education which (still) is frustratingly non-existent back home. Fast forward to the present, I’m heading back to Malaysia again end of this year and my mum has invited Wayne to be part of our family portrait. It took around 7 years for us to get to this point but if anything, my sexuality has brought us closer than ever before. 

This little win for me, against the backdrop of this milestone 50th year of pride, is what I wake up a little more grateful for everyday. Sharing this bit of personal joy with hope that more of these moments of #queerjoy can be echoed back from the wider LGBTQIA+ community.
