“Suck Teeth” is out today, and it’s the last advance single from the forthcoming L’Rain LP. (More about the full record on 6/25).
In terms of production and arrangement on this song, Taja (@turrelljames) and I were particularly influenced by the sound of American RnB records from the early 70s, when many artists had seemed to reach their breaking point psychologically and that fragile state of mind was reflected in the music and recording. Sly Stone’s “There’s a Riot Goin’ On” was one touchstone LP I remember us discussing at length. We similarly wanted “Suck Teeth” to feel a little like “shot nerves.”
At one point we tried to make our vocals sound like little kids’ voices for a background part. Taja, @chef_booboo_doodoo, and I went to a party supply store in Hollywood and ordered a bunch of helium-filled balloons. In between takes we’d suck in the helium and then quickly try to lay down the vocal part before it wore off. It didn’t work particularly well but it sure led to a lot of laughs! That moment of levity helped us power through during a difficult stretch in the recording process.
Shoutout to @jakeshermanwooo for the incredibly funky clavinet part, it really made the song come alive. And to @indiebuz on the drums. Throw Taja’s slinky bass in there and you have a recipe for a deep groove. Enjoy!
