Cosmas lived 30 minutes to the nearest health clinic and had regular check-ups throughout his life, but it wasn't until he was a teenager that he learned surgery was possible for his cleft condition. He walked three hours and took a four-hour bus ride to reach Operation Smile Malawi’s surgical program. After surgery, an excited Cosmas said, "...When I go home, people will stop making fun of me." Tomorrow, Operation Smile Malawi will begin another surgical program to help more children like Cosmas. This program will be the third Women in Medicine program this year, part of an initiative that provides educational pathways for women to be global leaders in health care.
