Best California road trip idea for August: 7-Day Itinerary π You will see the tallest trees in the world, scenic coastline and beaches, and escape the summer heat. Most of the views donβt require hiking. Day 1 β Mendocino β’ Mendocino Headlands State Park β’ Russian Gulch Park β’ Point Cabrillo Light Station β’ Charming Mendocino downtown Day 2 β Fort Bragg β’ Skunk Train or Railbikes β’ Glass Beach Day 3 β Avenue of the Giants β’ Stop at Chandelier Drive-Thru Tree in Leggett for a fun photo op β’ Drive Avenue of the Giants β’ Short hikes: Founders Grove, Rockefeller Loop Day 4 β Eureka + Trinidad β’ Redwood Sky Walk at Sequoia Park Zoo (Eureka) β’ Patrickβs Point / Sue-meg State Park β’ Trinidad Bay Overlook Day 5 β Fern Canyon + Klamath β’ Fern Canyon (permit required in summer) β’ Continue north to Klamath β’ Klamath River Overlook β’ Hike to Hidden Beach β’ Optional: Float or kayak on the emerald Klamath River (depending on your schedule and priorities you can do it on this or next day, or leave it for the way back). β’ Optional: Trees of Mystery. Itβs very similar to Eureka Skywalk, so pick which one fits your schedule better. Day 6 β Crescent City & Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park β’ Grove of Titans (1.3 mi, easy) β’ Stout Grove (0.7 mi, easy) β’ Simpson-Reed Trail (0.9 mi, easy) Day 7 β Drive back It takes about 5h to drive from Crescent city back to Mendocino or 6.5h to San Francisco.
