Best California road trip idea for August: 7-Day Itinerary 💚 You will see the tallest trees in the world, scenic coastline and beaches, and escape the summer heat. Most of the views don’t require hiking. Day 1 – Mendocino • Mendocino Headlands State Park • Russian Gulch Park • Point Cabrillo Light Station • Charming Mendocino downtown Day 2 – Fort Bragg • Skunk Train or Railbikes • Glass Beach Day 3 – Avenue of the Giants • Stop at Chandelier Drive-Thru Tree in Leggett for a fun photo op • Drive Avenue of the Giants • Short hikes: Founders Grove, Rockefeller Loop Day 4 – Eureka + Trinidad • Redwood Sky Walk at Sequoia Park Zoo (Eureka) • Patrick’s Point / Sue-meg State Park • Trinidad Bay Overlook Day 5 – Fern Canyon + Klamath • Fern Canyon (permit required in summer) • Continue north to Klamath • Klamath River Overlook • Hike to Hidden Beach • Optional: Float or kayak on the emerald Klamath River (depending on your schedule and priorities you can do it on this or next day, or leave it for the way back). • Optional: Trees of Mystery. It’s very similar to Eureka Skywalk, so pick which one fits your schedule better. Day 6 – Crescent City & Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park • Grove of Titans (1.3 mi, easy) • Stout Grove (0.7 mi, easy) • Simpson-Reed Trail (0.9 mi, easy) Day 7 – Drive back It takes about 5h to drive from Crescent city back to Mendocino or 6.5h to San Francisco.
